Prior to joining Carlyle, Levitt was the 25th Chairman of U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission from July 1, 1993 to February 9, 2001. First appointed by President Clinton in July 1993, the President reappointed him to a second five-year term in May 1998. In September 1999, he became the longest-serving Chairman of the Commission. He left the Commission in February 2001. Throughout his tenure at U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, he worked to educate, empower, and protect America’s investors. Early in his tenure, Levitt created the Office of Investor Education and Assistance and established a website. He conducted more than 40 investor town meetings throughout the country to listen to the concerns of investors and to give them tips on safe and wise participation in the securities markets. He served as Chairman of NYSE MKT LLC from 1978 to 1989.

He served as the Chairman of American Stock Exchange LLC from 1978 to 1989, and the New York City Economic Development Corporation from 1989 to 1993. He has been a Director of Motif Investing Inc. since February 2013. He has been a Director of Neuberger Berman Group LLC (Neuberger Berman Inc.) since May 1, 2001 and the Global Center for Leadership and Business Ethics since September 1, 2004.

He serves as a Director of Bloomberg L.P. He serves as Member of Advisory Board at Gold Bullion International LLC and Promontory Financial Group, LLC. He served as Chairman of Governance Leadership Council of RiskMetrics Group, LLC until June 16, 2009. He served as Director of CCBN.com, Inc. He served as Non-Executive Director of RiskMetrics Group, LLC from April 2005 to June 16, 2009. He served as Trustee at RAND Corporation. He served as a Director of The Relizon Company.
