Emily Chiu co-founded Block’s crypto business, TBD, to build an open source platform for decentralized financial services and self-sovereign identity. As Chief Operating Officer of TBD, Emily leads all business, operations, strategy, and product functions.

Over the past 5 years, Emily has held multiple executive leadership roles across Block (fka Square, NYSE: SQ). She led the development and launch of new products and businesses for Cash App, including Consumer Lending and Investing, and also oversaw mergers and acquisitions at Square.

Prior to Block, Emily was a technology investor, advisor, and entrepreneur. She built venture-backed startups in the education technology space and accredited universities, recognized as “breakthrough models in college completion” by EDUCAUSE and The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Outside of Block, Emily currently serves on the Board of Directors of JustWorks, Inc. (based in NYC) and Barnes & Noble Education (NYSE: BNED), where she is a member of the Audit Committee and the Nominating & Governance Committee.

From March 2016 to June 2022, Emily served on the Board of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), a leading global provider of executive education focused on leadership development, and was a member of its Executive Committee, Board of Governors, and Board of Trustees.

Emily started her career as a private equity investor and investment banker at Goldman Sachs, where she worked on mergers and acquisitions and financing transactions across the technology and healthcare sectors. Based in San Francisco, Emily is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania.
