While on the faculty of Harvard Business School from 1976 to 2003, James served as the senior associate dean and chairman of HBS Publishing, as well as the chairman of the MBA Program. At HBS, his research focused on the strategic use of information technology in the service sector, specifically the development of a performance measurement system for large information technology organizations. He earned an advanced degree in accounting and has been published extensively in accounting and information technology journals.

Currently, he provides management development and consulting services through The Cash Catalyst, LLC, which he formed in 2009. He is also a director of The Chubb Corporation, where he began serving in 1996, and General Electric Company, where he began serving in 1997. James has been a director of a number of other public companies, including Phase Forward Incorporated from 2003 to 2009, and Microsoft Corporation from 2001 to 2009. He has also served on the audit committees of several public companies.
