Michael Helfer was appointed Vice Chairman in June 2012, after being Citigroup's General Counsel and Corporate Secretary for almost 10 years. Prior to joining Citigroup in 2003, Mr. Helfer was President of Strategic Investments and Chief Strategic Officer at Nationwide Insurance. He had previously been a Partner and Chairman of the Management Committee of Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, clerked for Chief Judge David Bazelon (D.C. Cir.), and served as Counsel for the Subcommittee on Constitutional Amendments of the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. Mr. Helfer is a member of the American Law Institute, the Council on Foreign Relations, serves as Chairman of The Clearing House Association and Vice Chairman of the Regulatory Oversight Committee of the Financial Services Roundtable. A founding member of the Board of Directors of Lawyers for Children America, Mr. Helfer served as President of the Legal Aid Society in Washington, D.C., and is now a member of the Advisory Board of the Legal Aid Society of New York. He received his J.D. from Harvard Law School and a B.A. in economics from Claremont Men's College.
