Dr. Tom Traves is the past president and vice chancellor of Dalhousie University, having served in the position from 1995-2013. He was previously vice president (academic) at the University of New Brunswick and dean of arts at York University.Dr. Traves served as vice chair and chair elect of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) board of directors, and as a member of the AUCC’s Standing Advisory Committee on University Research. He was a member and past chair of the Association of Atlantic Universities, the American Association of Higher Education, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. He was a board member of the Greater Halifax Partnership and the chair and trustee of Clearwater Seafoods Income Fund.He is a former member of the Maritime Life Assurance Company and AT&T Canada, the Treasury Board of Canada Advisory Committee on Senior Level Retention and Compensation, the Halifax Regional Municipality Economic Strategy Advisory Committee, the Canadian Historical Society, and past Honorary Colonel of 12 Wing Shearwater.Dr. Traves has a BA from the University of Manitoba, an MA and PhD from York University, and an honorary doctorate from Umea University in Sweden.
