After completing his education, John joined Morgan Stanley in 1987. In 1994, he initiated Morgan Stanley Real Estate Funds’ European investment program. In 1995, Carrafiell became Head of Morgan Stanley’s European Real Estate Group. In 1999, he became a Managing Director of Morgan Stanley. In 2005, he became a Co-Head of Morgan Stanley Real Estate. John was also the President of the Special Situations Fund III and a senior advisor to Morgan Stanley.
As head of Morgan Stanley’s European Real Estate Group, John led Morgan Stanley’s £1.7 billion takeover of Canary Wharf in 2004.
In 2008, John stepped down as Co-Head of Morgan Stanley Real Estate to found Alpha Real Estate Advisors. Alpha Real Estate advised in Songbird Estates PLC’s £1.03 billion recapitalization.
In 2010, John co-founded GreenOak Real Estate, a private equity real estate firm with investments in New York, London, Tokyo and Spain. Green Oak was ranked 19th in the annual PERE 50 ranking of private equity real estate firms in 2014.
