Mac Van Wielingen is a veteran energy executive, private equity investor, director, and philanthropist. Van Wielingen’s unconventional corporate idealism has been developed through extensive experience in building businesses and by his knowledge as a self-described “student of business.” He is a founder and director (1989-present) of ARC Financial Corp., the largest private equity investment management company in Canada focused on the energy sector with approximately $5.3 billion of capital under management. ARC Financial has invested in more than 180 businesses, with ownership control in most, providing Van Wielingen with a unique foundation of experience and understanding relating to the challenges and realities of building businesses. He is also an original director of and until October 2017 was chair of Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo). Additionally, he is a founder and former chair (1996-2016) of ARC Resources Ltd., a leading company in Canada’s oil and gas sector. In 2015, ARC Resources was ranked #1 in Brendan Wood International’s Shareholder Confidence Index in the Energy and Power Group and was selected as the TopGun Board of the Year in 2015/16 when he was chair of the board. Van Wielingen is the founder and chair of Viewpoint Group, a private family-owned company, as well as chair of Viewpoint Investment Partners.

A strong advocate for advancing business leadership and corporate governance, Van Wielingen has always been a visionary and forceful thinker with an interest in leadership studies, but his efforts became more focused and prominent in response to the 2008-09 financial crisis. This interest led to his cofounding of the Canadian Centre for Advanced Leadership (CCAL) at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary in 2012, where he continues to serve as chair of the External Advisory Group. His lifelong passion for learning and sharing keeps him actively involved in speaking engagements, writing pursuits, and community events, with the goal of advancing dialogue and catalyzing positive change among directors and business leaders. Since 2010, Van Wielingen has participated in over 65 speaking engagements and has published two articles with The Conference Board of Canada (2015, 2017) focused on the evolving role of the corporate board. He has received numerous awards and recognition, including most recently induction into the Calgary Business Hall of Fame (2016), the Institute of Corporate Directors Fellowship Award (2016), and Chair of the Year, Alberta Oil (2015). Van Wielingen is an honours graduate of the Ivey School of Business in finance and also studied postgraduate economics at Harvard University.
